[Mellie] The Final Day Part 3

It felt like weeks that he had been like this, in reality it had been hours. She smoothed the hair back and his forehead and whispered in his ear, ‘It’s okay Malaki.... you can go...’ the tears rolling down her face as she admitted defeat and unwillingly let him go, ‘I’ll always love you.’

His last breath was heard.

A calm fell over the room as Mellie put her hand on his face and then to his chest and realised he was gone.

It was over.

[Mia] The Final Day Part 2

Mia heard her sister talk in a hushed voice to her love. She had no idea how she was still standing. She heard Mellie utter the words, ‘I wish we could grow old together and watch our son grow up...’ and her heart lurched. Mellie was having a boy.

Not being able to stand to hear the sounds coming out of the bedroom any longer, Mia went to seek refuge on the balcony.

Your Hand

His breathing had become staggered and spaced. With every breath, she wondered if it was going to be his last. His face was pale and clammy; his hands were cold, so cold. She wrapped her hand around his and kissed his finger tips softly.

‘My beautiful Malaki...’ she whispered, ‘I’ve known and loved you since I was 12. I remember when you held my hand for the first time; you kissed me, gave me a hug and told me that you loved me.’ A tear rolled down her cheek as she spoke, ‘I wish you could stay with me. Grow old with me and be with me when I give birth to our child.’ She eyed the envelope that she had left on the pillow beside his sleeping head. She picked up the envelope, clutching it to her chest, through tears opening it and eyed the words, identifying the sex of their child. ‘I need you Malaki....’ she squeezed his hand, breaking down, ‘I wish we could grow old together and watch our son grow up...’ She brought his hand to her face and she kissed it again, silent for a few moments as the sound of the room was filled with staggered breathing.

‘I’ll never forget you.... I love you,’ she whispered, as she lay down beside him, his hand still in hers as she spent the last few hours with the love of her life

After Aaron had carried Mellie to the couch and Mia grabbed a blanket to cover her over, they made their way to the balcony which had become their refuge to all the madness happening in the apartment. When they took their seats and Mia lit up a cigarette, he looked pensive when he asked, ‘Do you think I would make a good Dad?’

Mia was shocked for a moment, and took a long drag before even thinking about her response. In fact she took a couple of drags before responding and silently cursed she didn’t bring the bottle of tequila out to take a few swigs of that too. ‘I don’t think we are automatically good with parenting, it’s something we learn and something we take from our parents as guidance. My mom use to tell me that when she had Jack, Mellie and I, and was pregnant with Zach, she was all alone and she had no idea what she was doing. Now, even though I would never tell her, I think she did a pretty great job, even though I’m a bit fucked up.’

Mia looked at the concentration on Aaron's face and said softly, 'Why do you ask?'

When Aaron went through his own explanation and thought process, Mia finished her cigarette and immediately lit up again. If after this she wasn’t a chain smoker it was going to be a miracle.

It wasn’t often Mia took the hard line with Aaron. She wasn’t firm with him usually, and had a problem saying no to him, but this was important. He had to know this wasn’t something he could flake out on, and she knew he could be like that as he had broken her heart so many times before. ‘Just think really carefully Danger... because once you say it, you can’t take it back and you have to be there for everything, not just the good stuff. Everything.’

[Mellie] Sarajevo Part 8

Before she’d left Malaki for the evening, she sat with the envelope of the details of the baby on the bed beside him. She shared what she hoped for their baby, her fears that perhaps she wouldn’t measure up as a mother and how terrified she was to do it all alone. The fact that she fell pregnant in the first place was such a shock to them both. Now, the thought of being the only person that her baby had to rely on for everything made her numb with shock.

She’d still not opened the envelope though. Not that it would change the results, but maybe it would make this new found reality less real.

She was grateful when Aaron made them dinner. If it wasn’t for Aaron and Mia, she’d forget that the world continued outside of that room. She’d forget to eat. She’d forget about the little human that was growing inside her body. The conversations had over dinner, were mostly banter between Aaron and Mia. Mellie rarely contributed, smiled in places that she felt she should and only spoke when addressed.

Later on, Mia rubbed her belly and spoke to Nugget as Aaron massaged Mellie’s shoulders. It didn’t take long for Mel to fall asleep on her hands at the table.

Standing on the balcony, chatting with Aaron, mug of hot chocolate tightly warming up her hands, Mia stopped to hear inside. ‘Did you hear that?’ she asked as she craned her neck into the direction of the doorway. ‘I think Mel has is in the lounge...’ she said lowering her voice. With a nod of her head, she walked inside to see Mellie leaning over the chair, ‘Are you okay?’ Mia asked stepping forward slowly and walking around the chair to face Mel and take her hands. Mel nodded, ‘My back is hurting a lot. I think Nugget knows something is going on...’ she said, her voice trailing off. Mia nodded, as glanced at Aaron.

Mia was never one for love. But she had witnessed first-hand the last five years that Malaki and Mellie had spent together. At times it even made Mia cringe, groan and pretend to gag in the company of others. Now, she’d do anything to make her sister smile again. Hearing Mellie cry was the worst of the worst. The sobs were so gut-wrenching that it made Mia want to clamp her hands over her ears and just block out all sounds.

The whole situation made Mia think though; the next day could be her last. She was going to have to start living that way too.

[Mellie] Sarajevo Part 6

Mellie emerged from the bedroom, drained and exhausted. No matter how many tears she shed, prays she said to Kobe didn’t change the situation. It was what it was.

Both Aaron and Mia were nowhere to be seen when she came out, she was relieved. Whilst she was happy for the company, she just needed a time out. Nugget had been moving around non-stop and her back was hurting.

She leaned over a chair and breathed deeply. The events of the week kept circling her head along with Aaron’s assurances she wouldn’t be doing this alone, along with Mia’s promise to stand by her no matter what.

It was then she realised she was hungry...

[Mellie] Sarajevo Part 5

The tears rolled down her face as she looked down at Malaki’s pale face. She was trying to keep her voice steady, telling him about the ultrasound, how Aaron and Mia had promised to look after her and Nugget and how everything was going to be okay, that he could go and that it was okay and he could be free of pain.

Her chest was heavy, her heart breaking as she murmured the words that he could go and be free from the pain. She didn’t want him to go; she wanted him to stay forever. She wanted him to open his eyes, flash his gorgeous smile and then for the whole ordeal to be over. That they welcome their baby into the world together...

Looking down, she realised that wasn't going to be the case. He wasn’t with her anymore, but just a mere shell of his former self. She lay her head on the pillow next to him, wrapped her hand around his, entwining his fingers with hers and kissed his hand, pressing it to her face as she sobbed uncontrollably.

[Mia] Sarajevo Part 4

Aaron and Mellie returned from the ultrasound a few hours later. Mia had avoided Malaki’s room like the plague, only sticking her head in to make sure that he was still there, but actually stepping into the room was out of the question. She had no idea how her sister was doing it on a daily basis. Perching herself on the kitchen counter, Mia was relieved when she saw Aaron help Mellie through the door. She saw Mellie disappear into the bedroom and Aaron walk into the kitchen.

The room was silent for a few moments before Mia spoke.

'She feels guilty you know... she always vowed that she wouldn't make the mistakes that our parents made. Growing up without a father and all that, I mean, Mom tried, but Mellie wanted something different for her own children. 'I tried to tell her it's not her fault, I mean, she didn't know that this was going to happen, But...' Mia’s word hung in the air as she spoke softly revealing Mellie’s secret to Aaron as he looked through the cupboards to make lunch for them all.

Mia watched as his eyebrows furrowed and he stopped, looking concentrated at the ingredients and not responding right away, Mia’s attention turned to the bedroom, it was a whimper at first, followed by small uncontrollable sobs. Mia bit her lip and looked at Aaron, helpless; it was torture watching her sister go through this pain. It was worse to hear it.

Mia sighed, sinking to the floor in the kitchen against the wall and bringing her knees up to her chin. She hoped that this would turn out okay
.

[Mellie] Sarajevo Part 3

She awoke with Aaron crotched beside her, nudging her gently for her ultrasound. It was the last thing Mellie wanted to do today. Here, her boyfriend was dying and today she was going to see their baby.

She usually looked forward to doctor’s appointments, to see how Nugget was progressing but today, she just wanted to stay in the apartment and stay in that room with her love. She also knew Aaron wasn’t going to have any of that, he told her the night before he was going to look out for Nugget and do what she couldn’t. For the first time since the ordeal began, yesterday was the first day she didn’t feel alone.

Mel got dressed and ready, Mia joined them in the kitchen and kissed her sister good bye, giving her belly a pat. Mel was grateful to see Aaron had rented a car for them to go to the hospital; he filled the silence in the car with mindless chatter, as she looked out the window and wondered why the world continued to spin and turn, whilst hers had come to a complete standstill.

As Mel waited for her appointment, she hoped Malaki didn’t think she’d abandoned him. Even if he couldn’t hear her, she still told him where she was going. When her name was called, it snapped her out of her thoughts and she looked up. She looked over at Aaron in wide eyes, a look of fear washed over them. ‘Please come with me...’ she whispered, trying to blink away tears. As he stood up, she took his hand and followed the doctor in.

The doctor, oblivious to the drama that was currently happening in her world, smiled and grinned through the ultrasound and turned the screened to Mel and Aaron. ‘Congratulations Ms Stone! It’s a...’

[Mia] Sarajevo Part 2

The night before Mia was all Mellie focused, Mia put loads of washing on to ensure that Mel had clean clothes and cleaned up the apartment. When a knock came at the door, Mia looked over at her sister and waved at her to sit down. ‘I’ll get it. It’s okay.’ They weren’t expecting company... or so Mia thought.

To see him standing at the door, took Mia back. The anger she felt resurfaced briefly, and then it was gone. They were here for the same reason, the same purpose. There was no use getting angry now. Mia stepped aside to let him in and went to her room. She had to get her emotions under control, she did not want Mel to see her upset, it was not the time or the place.

Having Aaron there was a blessing, not that Mia would ever admit it. It wasn’t until after he arrived , she realised how exhausted she was. When he kissed her cheek and put her to bed, for the first time she didn’t protest. It didn’t take her long to slip into a deep sleep.

[Mia - Internal]

No matter what had happened in the past.

No matter what anyone else said.

Mellie was her sister.

She'll stand by her always.
